WASHINGTON, D.C., August 28, 2018 – The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) has published three new cold-formed steel framing research reports: 1) “RP17-4: Higher Strength Cold-Formed Steel Framed/Steel Shear Walls for Mid-Rise Construction,” 2) “RP17-5: Higher Capacity Cold-Formed Steel Sheathed and Framed Shear Walls for Mid-Rise Buildings, Part 1,” and 3) “RP17-6: Higher Capacity Cold-Formed Steel Sheathed and Framed Shear Walls for Mid-Rise Buildings, Part 2.”
Each research report represents a portion of an overall project that was undertaken at McGill University to increase knowledge of the behavior of cold-formed steel in order to advance design efficiency and ensure safety. The objectives of the project were to: 1) determine shear strength values for cold-formed steel frame steel sheathed shear walls constructed of thicker framing and sheathing members than are currently available for design, 2) determine the effect of frame blocking for low and high aspect ratio walls, and 3) recommend nominal shear strength values for both the U.S. and Canada, to be implemented in AISI S240, North American Standard for Cold-Formed Steel Structural Framing and AISI S400, North American Standard for Seismic Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Systems. The reports cover the following topics:
“The findings of this research are extremely encouraging towards the development of higher capacity steel sheet sheathed shear walls for mid-rise building construction, and the research team at McGill University should be commended for their efforts,” said Jay Larson, P.E., F.ASCE, managing director of AISI’s Construction Technical Program.
AISI’s codes and standards work is conducted under the Construction Market Council of the Steel Market Development Institute (SMDI), a business unit of AISI, which increases and defends the use of steel by developing innovative materials, applications and value-added solutions for customers in the automotive, construction and packaging markets.
AISI serves as the voice of the North American steel industry in the public policy arena and advances the case for steel in the marketplace as the preferred material of choice. AISI also plays a lead role in the development and application of new steels and steelmaking technology. AISI is comprised of 21 member companies, including integrated and electric furnace steelmakers, and approximately 120 associate members who are suppliers to or customers of the steel industry.
